Our podcast, Optimized, is our opportunity to bring you news from the frontline of elite sports performance, where biomarkers and analytics meets the possibilities of A.I. and machine learning. It’s also our chance to bring you the latest on what Orreco is up to.

In this episode of Orreco’s ‘Optimized’ podcast called ‘‘Immunology: Athletes to Astronauts” Marc Cleary is joined by Research Scientist and Orreco’s lead Immunologist, Dr. Forrest Baker for a fascinating and wide ranging conversation.

Marc and Forrest discuss how the demands of elite sport such as air travel, hotels, isolation and physical stress is comparable to Forrest’s research on the stress demands placed upon Astronauts travelling and living on the International Space Station. Forrest also explains how the immune system responds to bouts of exercise, where moderate acute bouts decrease the risk of infection.

Covid-19 is a timely topic and the conversation looks at the mechanism of the virus to infect our cells, while Forrest describes how the vaccine combats the virus and how exercise can increase the efficacy of the vaccine.

Finally, Dr. Baker outlines his PhD research on how the exercise-immune response can positively benefit cancer treatments and the possibility to donate healthy immune cells to patients fighting cancer.
